New Delhi witnessed a celebration of India’s rich artisanal heritage as the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) curated Legacy of Craft for the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, at the newly inaugurated cultural venue, The Kunj. Designed as a permanent hub for culture, craft, and commerce, the evening highlighted the country’s craftsmanship through fashion, live music, and dance.

Over 100 exquisite pieces were showcased at Karigar Sangam, created by National Awardees, Shilp Gurus, and master artisans. Visitors had the opportunity not only to admire but also to purchase these creations directly, reflecting a growing appreciation for India’s craft traditions.

The highlight of the evening was a fashion showcase featuring collections from Divyam Mehta, Payal Jain, Samant Chauhan, Suket Dhir, and Upāvita, who seamlessly blended heritage techniques into contemporary expressions. Techniques such as Kantha, Chikankari, hand embroidery on Bhagalpuri silks, hand block printing, Ikat, and Chanderi fabrics were brought to life, demonstrating how traditional crafts continue to inspire modern design.

Speaking at the occasion, Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), said, “The Kunj has been conceived as both a cultural beacon and a dynamic commercial hub. Through curated exhibitions, retail spaces, live demonstrations, and cultural programming, it will serve as a permanent destination to celebrate the spirit of ‘Handmade in India, Crafted for the World.’ ‘Legacy of Craft’ was a fitting reflection of this vision.”

Sunil Sethi, Chairman, FDCI, added, “The evening brought designers, artisans, and performers together in a holistic celebration of creativity. It was heartening to see visitors not just appreciating but also purchasing crafts at Karigar Sangam, reaffirming the vitality of our heritage. The event demonstrated how fashion, culture, and traditional crafts can converge into a meaningful experience.”

The event was graced by eminent dignitaries, including Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Smt. Neerja Sekhar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Rohit Kansal, Additional Secretary, MOT, Mugdha Sinha, MD ITDC, Smt. Shubhra, Trade Advisor, and Ms. Apoorva Srivastava, Ambassador to the Slovak Republic. Live music performances and a Kathak recital interwove seamlessly with the showcase, creating a multi-sensory cultural experience.
