Dengue: Early detection and medical advice are crucial for effective dengue management.

Dengue fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, continues to be one of the most pressing public health challenges across the globe. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly half of the global population is at risk, and outbreaks are becoming increasingly frequent in urban and rural regions alike. Countries in South Asia, including Bangladesh, are witnessing unprecedented case numbers, driven largely by prolonged rainfall and flooding that create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

Although most people infected with dengue experience mild symptoms such as fever, body pain, and fatigue, the illness can develop into severe forms. In such cases, patients may require hospitalisation, and fatalities are not uncommon. The risk of severe complications is notably higher among individuals who have contracted dengue before. While vaccines against dengue are available in some countries, they are not yet approved in India. The Importance of Awareness

Awareness and early preventive action are crucial for minimising the impact of dengue on individuals and communities. From a public health perspective, simple interventions such as reducing stagnant water, using repellents, and maintaining hygienic surroundings can significantly cut the chances of infection. For companies, the responsibility extends to protecting both on-site employees and staff travelling to high-risk areas. Ensuring robust policies and preventive measures can limit health risks while maintaining workforce productivity.

Action Steps for Organisations

Employers can protect their workforce by adopting structured strategies that combine awareness, education, and preventive practices. Some key measures include:

• Pre-Travel Preparedness: Before sending employees to dengue-prone regions, organisations should provide comprehensive health briefings. These sessions should cover local dengue risks, preventive measures, and emergency medical contacts.

• Mosquito Bite Prevention: Employees should be encouraged to use repellents, wear long-sleeved clothing, and stay in accommodations equipped with insect screens or air-conditioning. These basic steps dramatically lower the risk of exposure.

• Environmental Management: Offices and worksites should be inspected regularly to eliminate stagnant water and potential mosquito breeding grounds. This includes cleaning drains, covering water containers, and maintaining outdoor spaces.

• Health Education: Regular training can help employees identify early dengue symptoms, understand when to seek medical attention, and adopt consistent preventive habits.

• Access to Medical Care: Quick access to medical advice and treatment is vital. Timely care can prevent mild cases from escalating into severe illness, protecting both employee health and organisational continuity.

Building a Culture of Prevention

Ultimately, dengue prevention requires a shared commitment between individuals and organisations. Employees can protect themselves by making small lifestyle adjustments such as using repellents daily and being mindful of their environment while employers must provide the infrastructure, resources, and policies that support these efforts.

By embedding prevention into workplace culture and travel policies, organisations can not only safeguard employee health but also strengthen resilience against future outbreaks. Until vaccines are widely available, awareness and preventive practices remain the strongest defence against dengue.
