Bananas are among the most widely consumed fruits across the world, cherished for their taste and energy-boosting properties. Yet, while the fruit is savoured, its peel is often discarded without a thought. Health researchers and Ayurveda practitioners, however, are now drawing attention to the nutritional and medicinal value of this overlooked part of the fruit.

Medical experts point out that banana peels, which are usually thrown away as waste, are in fact edible and nutrient-rich. “According to Ayurveda and scientific research, banana peels can provide numerous benefits to the body, provided consumed correctly,” say health specialists.

Studies highlight that banana peels are packed with essential nutrients such as fibre, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, antioxidants, and magnesium. These, experts believe, can play a role in strengthening the digestive system, regulating blood pressure, and enhancing immunity. The presence of phytonutrients, they add, provides protection against harmful free radicals, while soluble fibre present in the peel slows the rise of blood sugar levels, a factor that could prove beneficial for diabetic patients.

Nutritionists also underline the peel’s role in lowering cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. Regular and moderate consumption, they say, can contribute to improved cardiovascular health.

Weight management is another area where the peel finds relevance. Owing to its high fibre content, it induces a feeling of fullness, prevents overeating, and simultaneously boosts metabolism, thus aiding fat-burning processes.

Dermatologists note that its natural antioxidants and antibacterial properties make banana peel a valuable home remedy for skin care. Rubbing the peel directly on the skin can reportedly help reduce acne and blemishes. Similarly, when applied to the scalp in paste form, it may reduce dandruff and curb hair fall.

Experts, however, caution against eating raw banana peels. They advice thorough washing followed by boiling or steaming before adding them to smoothies, teas, or cooked dishes. Culinary traditions in parts of South India even feature “banana peel chutney”. Given the peel’s slightly bitter taste, it is often enhanced with lemon, curd, or spices.

A note of caution is also issued regarding commercially available bananas, which may carry wax or chemical coatings. In such cases, experts recommend cleaning the peel with lukewarm salted water before consumption. For beginners, it is advisable to start with small amounts.
