
Sleep is the body’s reset button, and experts recommend at least 7 hours daily. But did you know your sleeping position can impact your health? Whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, each posture affects the body differently.

Sleeping on your back, also known as the supine position, keeps the head, neck, and spine aligned. It reduces pressure on the joints and even helps prevent wrinkles, which is why many people prefer it.

However, sleeping on back is not ideal for everyone. Those with snoring issues or sleep apnea may find their condition worsens. Pregnant women, especially after the fourth month, are also advised against this position as it may reduce blood flow to the baby.

Side sleeping, or the lateral position, is the most common worldwide. It supports proper spinal alignment, eases acid reflux, and reduces snoring—making it a healthy choice for many people.

But sleeping on your side for long hours can put pressure on the shoulders and hips, sometimes even causing wrinkles over time. Doctors recommend using the right pillow to support the head and neck for comfortable rest.

Sleeping on the left side is considered especially beneficial. It aids digestion, prevents acid reflux, and improves blood circulation for pregnant women, helping both mother and baby.

Sleeping on the right side, however, may put strain on organs like the liver and worsen acid reflux. For some heart patients, though, it may feel more comfortable. Experts say the “best” position depends on your health and comfort.

Certain groups need to be extra cautious. People with sleep apnea should avoid sleeping on their back, while Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) patients benefit most from sleeping on the left side. Pregnant women in later stages should also avoid lying flat on their back. Choosing a soft mattress and the right pillow makes all the difference for healthy, restorative sleep.
