Ayudha Puja 2025: Significance

Ayudha Puja is also known as Shastra Puja or Astra Puja, meaning the worship of weapons. While in ancient times, warriors offered prayers to their arms before going to battle, in modern times, the tradition has widened to include everything that helps people in their work.

For example, craftsmen worship their tools, students and professionals offer prayers to their books, and many perform rituals for their vehicles. It is believed that worshipping these items shows gratitude for the role they play in helping people earn a living and lead their lives.

Some devotees even keep their books and accounting materials in the puja as they are considered symbols of knowledge and prosperity.

Ayudha Puja 2025: The Story Behind This Festival

The roots of this festival go back to the story of Goddess Durga and her battle against the demon Mahishasura. According to legend, the gods gave Durga various weapons to fight the buffalo demon. After a fierce nine-day battle, she finally defeated him on the eve of Navami.

Worshipping tools and weapons on this day is a way of paying respect to the divine powers and instruments that helped her achieve victory.
