September in India is that golden window between monsoon magic and festive fervour. As the rains recede, the landscapes shimmer in renewed greenery, and the air carries the subtle anticipation of Navratri, Durga Puja, and Diwali. It’s also the start of what travel experts call the Great Indian Festive Migration – a time when people journey back to their hometowns or seek short escapes to rejuvenate before weeks of festivities and family gatherings.

For travellers looking to make the most of this brief interlude, some destinations perfectly combine scenic beauty, cultural experiences, and an early taste of the festive spirit. Here are seven spots that promise a memorable pre-festive getaway.

Recommended Stories

1. Coorg, Karnataka – Coffee & Calm

Coorg, often called the Scotland of India, is famous for its misty hills, sprawling coffee plantations and cascading waterfalls. The post-monsoon season adds freshness to its landscapes, making it a soothing getaway. A four-day trip works best for this destination. On the first day, visit Abbey Falls and Raja’s Seat, on day two, explore Talacauvery and Dubare Elephant Camp and spend the third day relaxing in coffee estates. Consider a homestay to experience Kodava hospitality and savour the local cuisine. The nearest airports are Mangaluru International Airport (150 km) and Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru (250 km). Both cities also have railway stations, from where you can hire a cab or take a bus to Coorg.

2. Udaipur, Rajasthan – Romance in the City of Lakes

Udaipur is a jewel of Rajasthan, celebrated for its shimmering lakes, royal palaces and timeless charm. Post-monsoon, the city glows with full lakes and pleasant weather, perfect for exploration. A three-day itinerary works well in this Venice of the East. Spend one day exploring the City Palace and Jag Mandir, another strolling through old markets and cafés and end with a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola. Staying in a heritage haveli or lake-facing hotel makes the experience unforgettable. Maharana Pratap Airport, Udaipur, connects well with metros like Delhi and Mumbai. Trains and luxury buses also offer convenient access. In fact, if you are willing to go a little overboard and splurge, luxury trains like Palace On Wheels and Maharaja Express are worth the experience.

3. Munnar, Kerala – Green Escapes

Perched in the Western Ghats, Munnar is a haven for tea lovers with plantations spreading over acres, breathtaking misty peaks, and varied species of fauna. September brings vibrant greenery and roaring waterfalls, creating postcard-worthy views. A three-day trip is ideal. Day one can be for tea gardens and Attukad Waterfalls, day two for Eravikulam National Park and Anamudi Peak and day three for spice markets and Mattupetty Dam. Staying at a plantation resort lets you experience Munnar’s slow and peaceful rhythm. A four-hour drive from Cochin International Airport (110 km) or Ernakulam Junction gives you a scenic view of lush green hairpin bends.

4. Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh – Music & Culture

Known for its rolling rice fields, pine-clad hills and Apatani tribal culture, Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh is one of Northeast India’s most enchanting destinations. September is the best time to visit the place as it gives you a chance to attend the famous Ziro Music Festival. If you are planning a five-day trip during the festival, make sure to book campsites or homestays in advance. Other than the music festival, you can also spend your days taking village walks, cultural tours and gentle treks through pine forests. Evenings by the bonfire under a starlit sky are unforgettable. As Ziro Valley lies in a restricted area of Arunachal Pradesh, make sure to obtain the required permits. The closest airport is Lilabari Airport (100 km), and the nearest railway station is Naharlagun. Both are well connected to Guwahati, from where you can easily get cabs or shared taxis to the valley.

5. Western Ghats Waterfalls – Dudhsagar, Athirappilly & Jog

The Western Ghats turn into a wonderland of waterfalls after the rains. Dudhsagar in Goa cascades like a milky curtain, Athirappilly in Kerala is often called the Niagara of India and Jog Falls in Karnataka is one of the tallest in the country. Two days are enough to enjoy each waterfall, so you can easily plan a weekend getaway from Maharashtra, Goa and down South. Dedicate one day to the falls and another to exploring nearby sanctuaries or towns. Monsoon and post-monsoon months are ideal, so September makes for the perfect visit. Dudhsagar can be accessed via Goa or Belagavi, followed by a jeep ride or trek. Athirappilly is 55 km from Kochi, and Jog Falls is just 30 km from Shimoga, which is well connected to Bengaluru.

6. Offbeat Southern Escapes – Palakkayam Thattu, Gandikota & Yercaud

For travellers who prefer quieter routes, these offbeat gems offer a refreshing escape from the chaos of mainstream tourist hotspots. Palakkayam Thattu in Kerala is a hilltop haven with ziplining and picturesque views. Gandikota in Andhra Pradesh, known as India’s Grand Canyon, offers dramatic landscapes and historic ruins. Yercaud in Tamil Nadu charms with rose gardens, coffee estates and its peaceful lake. Plan a three-day visit to each destination. Spend the first day exploring natural sites, the second for treks, and the third to relax in eco-resorts or homestays. If you are a slow traveller, then these are a must-visit before you join the festive buzz. Palakkayam Thattu is located 50 km from Kannur International Airport. Gandikota lies 280 km from Bengaluru, well connected via road and Jammalamadugu Railway Station. Yercaud is 30 km from Salem, well connected to Chennai and Bengaluru via rail and road.
