Our eyes are among the hardest-working organs in the body. From reading and driving to working on laptops and scrolling endlessly on phones, we rely on them constantly. Yet, many of us take eye health for granted. “In our busy lives, we often develop habits that silently deteriorate our eyesight over time,” says Dr. Chanda Gupta, Senior Consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, Delhi.

Here are five everyday mistakes that may be putting your eyes at risk, and how to correct them.

1. Excessive Screen Time

Digital devices have become unavoidable, but prolonged use can lead to computer vision syndrome – causing dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and even neck pain.“Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds,” advises Dr. Gupta. Adjust brightness, enlarge text if needed, and remember to blink often to reduce eye strain.

2. Frequent Eye Rubbing

Rubbing tired eyes may feel soothing, but it can transfer bacteria from your hands, causing infections. Worse, it may weaken the cornea over time. “Constant rubbing can lead to conditions like keratoconus, which thins the cornea,” warns Dr. Gupta. Instead, rinse eyes with clean water or use lubricating drops to relieve discomfort.

3. Skipping Sunglasses Outdoors

UV rays don’t just damage skin; they harm your eyes, too. Without protection, the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration rises. “Always wear sunglasses that block 100% UVA and UVB rays, even on cloudy days,” says Dr. Gupta. Wraparound frames add extra safety.

4. Using Old or Unsafe Eye Makeup

Expired mascaras and eyeliners can harbour bacteria, leading to redness and irritation.

“Replace eye makeup every 3–6 months and never share it with others,” suggests Dr. Gupta. Always remove makeup before sleeping to keep the delicate glands around your eyes unclogged.

5. Ignoring Eye Check-ups

Many vision-threatening diseases progress silently. “Conditions like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy can develop without symptoms until it’s too late,” notes Dr. Gupta. A yearly eye exam can help detect problems early.

Diet and Eye Health

Nutrition is equally important. Vitamins A, C, E, zinc, and omega-3s support strong vision. Leafy greens, carrots, nuts, seeds, and fish like salmon are excellent choices. “Diet plays a key role in preventing age-related eye issues,” adds Dr. Gupta.

Your eyes deserve the same care you give to your skin and hair. By breaking harmful habits and adopting protective practices, you safeguard not just your vision but your quality of life.
