West Bengal politics has once again witnessed major turmoil as speculation of a split within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has intensified. Leaders Rita Vrata and Sandeep Shah reached the Assembly claiming that a large number of TMC MLAs are supporting them. Reports suggest that out of 80 TMC MLAs, nearly 59 MLAs may be backing the rebel faction, according to their claims. This situation has raised questions about the strength of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership and the internal stability of the party. Under the anti-defection law, the rebel group would need support of at least two-thirds of MLAs (around 52+) to avoid disqualification, and their claim reportedly exceeds this threshold. Political observers say that if these numbers are confirmed, it could lead to a major realignment in Bengal politics and possibly a formal split in TMC. However, the authenticity of these claims is still uncertain and would require verification through official procedures in the Assembly and Speaker’s decision. The situation has sparked intense debate over internal party dissatisfaction, leadership disputes, and the future structure of TMC in West Bengal.
