A fresh political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh following remarks made by religious preacher Dhirendra Shastri in connection with a recent murder case in Ghaziabad. Referring to the killing of a youth named Surya Chauhan, Shastri claimed that a new form of “jihad” has emerged, which he termed “friendship jihad,” adding it to earlier terms like love jihad and land jihad. His comments have triggered strong political reactions, with opposition leaders accusing him of using inflammatory language and promoting division in society. Critics argue that such statements risk escalating tensions and politicising criminal incidents ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections. Shastri’s remarks were made in the context of ongoing debates surrounding the alleged murder case, where the victim was reportedly killed by acquaintances. He further claimed that certain elements are targeting social harmony and religious traditions, while calling for “ghar wapsi” initiatives in some regions. Opposition parties have condemned the language, stating that religious figures should promote unity rather than political narratives. The controversy is expected to intensify further as the election season approaches, adding to the already heated political climate in the state.
