SIR Expansion Begins: Punjab, Uttarakhand Among 16 States Set for Voter Roll Revision

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of electoral rolls is set to begin across 16 states and three Union Territories, marking a major step in updating and verifying voter lists ahead of upcoming elections. According to sources, states including Punjab and Uttarakhand will witness the next phase of the revision exercise beginning from the first week of July. Election officials are expected to carry out the process in multiple phases, with draft electoral rolls scheduled to be released gradually from early July until the final week of the exercise. The preliminary voter lists will continue to be published in different states up to October 21, allowing citizens to verify details, apply for corrections, and update voter information. The move comes after earlier rounds of the SIR process were reportedly completed in states including Bihar and several eastern regions. Authorities are now shifting focus toward politically significant states where future assembly elections are expected to play a crucial role. Officials indicated that the final electoral rolls will also be released in phases between September and December after claims, objections, and verification procedures are completed. The process is considered a key administrative exercise to ensure transparency, eliminate duplicate entries, and include eligible new voters before elections. Political observers believe the revision exercise carries added significance in states likely to witness intense political battles in the coming months. In particular, Punjab and Uttarakhand are expected to remain under close political focus as parties begin preparations for future electoral contests. Election authorities have urged citizens to participate actively in the verification process and ensure their names and details are correctly updated in the voter lists. The phased rollout of the SIR exercise is expected to continue throughout the second half of the year.
