Politics: BJP Wave Sweeps Maharashtra Civic Polls as Thackeray Stronghold in Mumbai Shows Signs of Crumbling

The emerging trends from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections and other civic polls across Maharashtra indicate a decisive surge for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. Mirroring its Assembly election performance, the alliance appears to be consolidating power, with the BJP delivering a standout performance in key urban centres including Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. After nearly 25 years of uninterrupted dominance, the Thackeray family’s hold over the BMC is showing clear signs of erosion. While the Thackeray brothers continue to maintain influence in Marathi-dominated pockets, the overall momentum has shifted decisively in favour of the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. Early trends suggest the BJP is leading in a significant number of wards it contested, emerging as a potential single largest party in Mumbai’s civic body. Statewide, the BJP alliance is reportedly leading in 26 out of 29 municipal corporations, underlining a broader political wave. Congress has struggled to make an impact beyond limited pockets, while parties like AIMIM and NCP factions have failed to open their accounts meaningfully. Even the MNS, despite aggressive campaigning, has shown only marginal gains. Political analysts note that while the Thackeray brand has not collapsed entirely, its long-standing dominance has undeniably weakened. If trends hold, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis could emerge as the central figure shaping Mumbai’s civic power structure, marking a historic shift in the city’s political landscape.
