The Women’s Reservation Bill has failed to pass in the Lok Sabha due to the government not securing the required two-thirds majority, triggering intense political reactions across the country. Following the bill’s defeat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies staged protests at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, accusing opposition parties of being anti-women. Protests also spread to several cities, with clashes of narratives between ruling and opposition camps. Leaders like Amit Shah criticized the opposition for celebrating the bill’s failure, calling it disrespectful to women’s empowerment. On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi argued that the bill was linked to delimitation and structural changes in the federal system, which the opposition strongly opposed. The BJP claims the opposition blocked a historic opportunity for women’s representation, while opposition parties insist they supported genuine reservation without hidden political conditions. The issue has now become a major political flashpoint, expected to influence upcoming state elections and shape narratives around women voters in the 2027–2029 electoral cycle.
