A heated and detailed debate continued in the Lok Sabha over the Women’s Reservation Bill and its associated constitutional amendments, with Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal voicing strong concerns about the linkage between women’s reservation and the delimitation process. Harsimrat Kaur Badal argued that while the principle of increasing women’s representation in Parliament is widely supported, the method of implementation raises serious questions. She suggested that instead of linking reservation to future delimitation and census exercises, the government should consider expanding representation within the existing parliamentary structure. She criticized the reliance on future census and delimitation processes, stating that the lack of clarity over timing and methodology creates uncertainty. According to her, constitutional provisions require transparency in how electoral boundaries and representation are determined, and any ambiguity could impact federal balance and trust in the process. The MP also questioned the broader intent behind the legislation, alleging that women’s reservation is being used alongside other structural changes in a manner that could have political implications. She emphasized that delimitation should not be used as a “tool” for political advantage and must be based on clear, transparent, and agreed-upon procedures. Her remarks also highlighted broader political concerns about pre-election promises and the consistency of political commitments toward women’s empowerment. She argued that repeated assurances without timely implementation weaken public trust in governance.
