NEET Row: Kharge Demands Discussion Under Rule 267, Says Opposition Ready After Procedure Is Set

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has clarified the opposition’s stand on the ongoing NEET controversy debate in Parliament, stating that discussions should take place under Rule 267 before any further proceedings. His remarks came as protests continued and both Houses remained disrupted, with proceedings adjourned till 2 pm. Speaking to reporters, Kharge said the opposition has already submitted a notice under Rule 267 and wants the matter to be taken up by setting aside regular business. He indicated that the opposition wants a detailed discussion on the issue and will present its views once the debate begins under the demanded procedure. The government, meanwhile, has maintained that it is ready for a discussion on the NEET paper leak issue but wants the format, timing, and duration of the debate to be decided according to parliamentary rules. The ruling side has argued that discussions must follow established procedures and that all parties should coordinate with the Speaker to finalise the process. The disagreement between the two sides is now focused on the rule under which the debate should be conducted. While the government has offered a discussion framework, the opposition is insisting on a specific parliamentary mechanism before participating. Kharge’s statement suggests that the opposition is not rejecting a debate but wants the issue to be discussed under the provisions it has demanded. The NEET controversy continues to dominate parliamentary proceedings, with both sides maintaining their positions.
