  • US Secretary Marco Rubio began a four-day India visit in Kolkata.
  • Discussions to focus on trade, defense, and Indo-Pacific strategy.
  • Rubio will meet Prime Minister Modi and attend a Quad meeting.
  • Energy security and humanitarian visits are also on agenda.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday, kicking off a four-day diplomatic visit to India that is expected to focus heavily on trade, energy cooperation, defence ties and the Indo-Pacific strategy.

Rubio’s arrival in Kolkata carries both political and symbolic significance. He became the first US secretary of state to visit the eastern metropolis in 14 years, with the last such visit taking place in May 2012 when Hillary Clinton travelled to the city.

The visit also comes just weeks after West Bengal underwent a major political shift with a BJP-led government taking office, adding further attention to the opening leg of Rubio’s India tour.

PM Modi Meeting and Strategic Talks in Focus

Shortly after arriving in India, Rubio’s schedule pointed towards high-level engagements in New Delhi, including a planned meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a post on X, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed Rubio’s arrival and outlined the broad scope of discussions expected during the visit.

“Secretary Marco Rubio has landed in Kolkata. This is his first trip to India. Later today, we will call on Prime Minister @narendramodi in New Delhi. Trade, Technology, Defence, QUAD, and many other items to discuss and advance over the next few days!” Gor wrote.

The visit is being closely watched as Washington and New Delhi continue expanding cooperation across strategic sectors, particularly amid growing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific region.

Kolkata Visit Includes Missionaries of Charity Stop

Rubio’s Kolkata itinerary includes visits to key humanitarian and cultural landmarks in the city.

According to the US Department of State, the Secretary of State is scheduled to visit Mother House, the headquarters of Saint Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, located in central Kolkata. He will also visit the Children’s Home in the city during his stay.

The stops are expected to highlight humanitarian outreach alongside the broader diplomatic and strategic agenda of the trip.

Energy Security Emerges as Major Talking Point

Energy cooperation is expected to be one of the central themes of Rubio’s India visit, especially against the backdrop of global supply concerns and volatility in energy markets.

Speaking to reporters in Miami before departing for Sweden and India, Rubio said the United States wanted to deepen energy ties with India.

“Well, we want to sell them as much energy as they’ll buy. And obviously, you’ve seen I think we’re at historic levels of US production, and US export,” Rubio said.

When asked about India facing pressure from rising energy prices linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio described India as a “great partner” and signalled optimism about further cooperation between the two countries.

Quad Meeting Set for May 26

A key diplomatic highlight of the visit will be the Quad meeting scheduled for May 26.

The meeting is expected to bring together Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who will preside over the gathering.

The Quad grouping, comprising India, the United States, Australia and Japan, has increasingly emerged as a major strategic platform focused on regional security, maritime cooperation and maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Rubio’s India tour, which also includes Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi, is being viewed as an important step in reinforcing US-India strategic ties at a time of evolving geopolitical and economic challenges.
