A major clash erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) during the Vijayadashami celebrations as ABVP and left-affiliated student groups came face to face over allegations related to Durga Puja festivities. According to ABVP, left groups disrespected the Durga idol during a procession by allegedly showing a slipper towards the deity, sparking anger and protests. The left student groups, however, strongly opposed these claims, accusing ABVP of using religion for political motives. The situation escalated further when a Ravana effigy was reportedly displayed along with photographs of jailed student leaders such as Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, which enraged the left factions. Heated arguments soon turned into sloganeering and eventually scuffles between the two groups outside the JNU gate. Both sides traded serious accusations, with ABVP alleging repeated attempts of disrespect to religious sentiments and the left accusing ABVP of instigating violence under the guise of religious symbolism. The visuals from the site show students shouting slogans and engaging in confrontations, while security personnel tried to control the situation. The clash has once again highlighted the deep ideological divide between student groups on the JNU campus, raising concerns about recurring tensions during festivals and political events.
