In a surprise move, the BJP-led NDA has announced CP Radhakrishnan, the current Governor of Maharashtra, as its official candidate for the post of Vice President of India. The decision was finalized in a BJP Parliamentary Board meeting, and party president JP Nadda made the announcement public. Radhakrishnan, a seasoned politician from Tamil Nadu, has been a two-time MP from Coimbatore and served as BJP’s Tamil Nadu president from 2004 to 2007. Known for his close ties with leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani, he has also had a long-standing association with the RSS, joining it in 1974. The announcement came shortly after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation due to health concerns. Ahead of the announcement, Radhakrishnan was seen visiting Siddhivinayak Temple, a moment now seen as symbolic by many. The NDA, with 423 out of 782 members in both Houses of Parliament, appears comfortably positioned to secure his election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan via social media, expressing confidence in his public service track record. The focus now shifts to the opposition, which has yet to declare its candidate. The nomination deadline is August 21.
