India And African Union Defer Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit Over Health Concerns

India and the African Union have agreed to postpone the Fourth India–Africa Forum Summit (IAFS IV), which was originally scheduled to be held in New Delhi from May 28 to 31, 2026.

The decision was announced in a joint press release issued on May 21 following consultations between the Government of India, the Chairperson of the African Union, and the African Union Commission.

Discussions Held On Emerging Health Situation

According to the statement, both sides exchanged views on the evolving health situation in parts of Africa and reiterated the importance of continued cooperation in strengthening public health preparedness and response capacities across the continent.

The joint statement noted that this cooperation would include support to the Africa CDC and relevant national institutions.

India Reaffirms Solidarity With Africa

India reaffirmed its solidarity with the governments and people of Africa and expressed readiness to support Africa CDC-led efforts aimed at addressing the evolving health situation.

The statement said this support would be in line with the shared commitment to an Africa-led response.

Decision Taken To Ensure Wider Participation

The two sides said consultations were held while recognising the importance of ensuring the full participation and engagement of African leaders and stakeholders, and keeping in mind the emerging public health situation on the continent.

Following these discussions, India and the African Union agreed that it would be advisable to convene the summit at a later date.

New Dates To Be Announced Later

The statement said new dates for the Fourth India–Africa Forum Summit and its associated meetings would be finalised through mutual consultations and communicated in due course.

India-Africa Partnership Reaffirmed

India and Africa also reaffirmed their longstanding partnership based on solidarity, mutual respect, South–South cooperation, and a shared commitment to peace, development, prosperity, and the well-being of their people.
