Historic Trade Move: US Lowers Tariff on India to 18%, Markets React Positively

In a major diplomatic and economic development, India and the United States have reached a critical trade agreement, reducing tariffs on Indian exports from 50% to 18%. This reduction comes after extensive negotiations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling strengthened bilateral ties and enhanced trade opportunities for Indian businesses. Analysts say this move is both an economic and political statement, addressing previous tensions in the India-US strategic partnership while paving the way for smoother commerce and investment flows. The agreement reflects India’s careful and strategic diplomacy, often referred to as “duck diplomacy,” where patience and restraint were prioritized to achieve national interests without public confrontations. While the tariff reduction is a welcome development for exporters, experts caution that the deal is a mini trade agreement rather than a full free-trade pact, with sector-specific details yet to be finalized.
