The Central Government has announced a major change to medicine regulations by making a doctor’s prescription mandatory for the purchase of syrups. The Ministry of Health has issued a new notification amending the relevant drug rules, removing syrups from the category of medicines that could previously be obtained without a prescription. Under the revised guidelines, pharmacies will no longer be allowed to sell any type of syrup—including cough syrups, health supplements, and children’s syrups—without a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner. The move aims to curb the misuse and over-the-counter sale of such products. Officials said the decision was taken in light of past incidents where improper use of cough syrups and other liquid medicines allegedly caused serious health complications and even deaths. By tightening regulations, the government seeks to ensure safer consumption of medicines and encourage responsible medical supervision. Chemists violating the new rules may face action under the updated regulatory framework.
