ECONOMY WATCH: RBI Cuts India’s FY Growth Forecast to 6.6%, Flags Global Risks and Energy Concerns

India’s economic growth outlook has been revised downward by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which now projects the country’s GDP growth at 6.6% for the current financial year. The revised estimate marks a reduction from the earlier forecast of 6.9%, reflecting growing concerns over global uncertainties, energy-related challenges, and evolving geopolitical tensions. The announcement came alongside the RBI’s latest monetary policy decision, where the central bank kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25%. The decision means borrowers are unlikely to see an immediate increase in loan repayment costs, offering relief to consumers with home loans, vehicle loans, and other credit-linked obligations. While maintaining policy stability, the RBI highlighted several risks that could weigh on economic momentum in the months ahead. Among the key concerns are rising energy costs and disruptions linked to ongoing geopolitical developments across various regions. Policymakers believe that volatility in global energy markets could increase input costs, impact consumption patterns, and affect overall economic activity. Another major factor identified by the central bank is the performance of the monsoon season. A weaker-than-expected monsoon could affect agricultural output, rural demand, and inflation trends, creating additional pressure on growth prospects. Given agriculture’s significant contribution to employment and consumption, weather-related uncertainties remain a crucial variable for the broader economy. Economists view the revised forecast as a cautious assessment rather than a sign of severe slowdown. India continues to remain one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, supported by domestic demand, infrastructure spending, and investment activity. However, the latest projection underscores the need for vigilance as external risks continue to influence economic conditions. The revised growth estimate is expected to shape market expectations and policy discussions as the financial year progresses amid an increasingly uncertain global environment.
