The Delhi High Court has upheld the Centre’s decision to continue a temporary restriction on the messaging platform Telegram, following concerns raised by the government over alleged misuse of the platform during competitive examinations, including NEET. The order comes after the Centre submitted that the platform was being monitored due to its suspected role in facilitating the circulation of examination-related leaks and other unlawful activities under investigation. Authorities argued that the interim restriction was necessary to maintain the integrity of the examination process and prevent disruption ahead of the upcoming NEET examination scheduled on June 21. According to official submissions, investigative agencies have identified multiple instances where digital channels were allegedly used to circulate sensitive information, prompting preventive action. The court accepted the government’s reasoning and declined to interfere with the temporary measure, effectively extending the restriction until June 22, after the completion of the examination cycle. Telegram had challenged the order, seeking relief against the interim ban, but the plea was not accepted at this stage of proceedings. The decision has been described as a significant legal validation of the government’s preventive approach in addressing digital platform misuse during high-stakes examinations. Officials maintain that the restriction is temporary and limited in scope, aimed solely at ensuring fair conduct of the examination process. Further proceedings in the matter may be taken up after the conclusion of the exam period.
