Amid escalating anti-government protests in Iran and rising tensions with the United States, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to hold an emergency meeting on Iran later today. The meeting, convened at the initiative of the United States, is scheduled for around 1:00 am IST and is expected to focus on the deteriorating security and human rights situation inside Iran, as well as growing regional risks. The move comes as Iran faces widespread unrest against the Khamenei-led regime, alongside sharp confrontations with Washington. Tehran has accused Israel of destabilising the region with US backing, while Israel continues to view Iran as an existential threat. Iran’s state media has also issued indirect threats against former US President Donald Trump, even as Iranian officials appear on American news channels to present Tehran’s position. Western governments remain cautious. Britain has recalled its ambassador from Iran and withdrawn all embassy staff, signaling serious concern over the security situation. Analysts note that such diplomatic pullbacks often precede major geopolitical shifts. Despite conciliatory statements about halting executions, experts warn that Iran’s military preparations and firm rhetoric—especially regarding ballistic missile capabilities—suggest readiness for confrontation. The UNSC meeting is now seen as a critical moment that could shape whether the crisis moves toward de-escalation, regime change pressures, or a broader conflict.
