A historic political moment is unfolding in West Bengal as senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the state’s first-ever BJP Chief Minister today. The grand swearing-in ceremony will be held at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata at 11:00 AM amid massive celebrations by BJP workers and supporters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J. P. Nadda, senior BJP leaders, Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from 20 NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony, making it one of the biggest political events in Bengal’s recent history. Suvendu Adhikari was formally elected as the BJP legislature party leader during a meeting of newly elected MLAs. Amit Shah officially announced his name before Adhikari later met the Governor to stake claim to form the government. Adhikari’s political journey has been remarkable. Once considered a close aide of Mamata Banerjee in the Trinamool Congress, he joined the BJP in December 2020. In the 2021 Assembly elections, he defeated Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram contest, becoming one of BJP’s strongest faces in Bengal politics. In the 2026 elections, Adhikari once again emerged victorious, including a major win in Bhabanipur, considered Mamata Banerjee’s political stronghold. His rise from councillor to Chief Minister marks a major shift in Bengal’s political landscape and a landmark moment for the BJP in eastern India.
