Breaking News: Shankaracharya–Prayagraj Administration Face-Off Escalates as Mela Authority Issues Second Notice

The standoff between Jyotirmath Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand and the Prayagraj Mela administration has intensified, entering its fifth day at the Sangam ghats. The Mela Authority has issued a second notice to the Shankaracharya, questioning alleged mismanagement during Mauni Amavasya and seeking an explanation within 24 hours as to why the land allotted for his camp should not be cancelled. The administration has warned that action will be taken as per rules if no satisfactory reply is received. In response, the Shankaracharya has sent a strong rebuttal, rejecting the allegations and asserting that religious activities should remain free from administrative interference. He has also cautioned that any action taken with “malicious intent” would be challenged constitutionally. The dispute has exposed deep divisions within the saint community, with one faction terming the protest politically motivated, while another accuses the government of insulting a revered religious leader. Opposition parties have targeted the Uttar Pradesh government, alleging disrespect toward Sanatan Dharma and saints, while the RSS has publicly defended the government, raising questions about the Shankaracharya’s actions. With notices, counter-notices, and sharp rhetoric from both sides, prospects of reconciliation currently appear bleak, turning the issue into a high-voltage political and religious flashpoint.
