Tension escalated sharply in West Bengal’s Hooghly district ahead of the final phase of Assembly elections after the convoy of Mitali Bag, a Member of Parliament from the All India Trinamool Congress, was allegedly attacked in the Goghat area. The incident occurred while she was travelling towards Arambagh, when her vehicle was reportedly surrounded and damaged during a clash involving supporters of the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party. According to visuals and reports from the spot, the vehicle suffered significant damage, with its front windshield shattered and the rear portion also showing signs of heavy impact. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the convoy was stopped and attacked by a group of people who allegedly used sticks to strike the vehicle multiple times. The MP was present inside the car at the time of the incident and was reportedly attempting to calm the situation before it escalated further. The attack triggered fresh tension in the area, with both sides blaming each other for provocation. Security forces were later deployed to bring the situation under control as clashes spread in parts of Goghat. The incident comes at a sensitive time, with campaigning for the second phase of voting scheduled to conclude shortly and polling set for April 29 in 142 constituencies across West Bengal. Several districts, including Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas, remain on high alert due to repeated reports of political clashes. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and review security arrangements for candidates and public representatives ahead of voting. The situation remains tense but is being closely monitored.
