Politics surrounding the Brahmin community has intensified in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In UP, the Samajwadi Party raised the demand in the Assembly for declaring a public holiday on Parashuram Jayanti, observed on April 19. Party leader Kamal Akhtar urged the government to announce an official holiday on the occasion, a move widely seen as playing the “Brahmin card” amid ongoing caste-based political calculations. The demand has sparked mixed reactions. While some members of the Brahmin community have welcomed the proposal, there is reported resentment among sections of other communities as well. The issue has added a fresh dimension to identity-based politics in the state. Responding to the demand, Assembly Speaker Satish stated that there is no immediate response to such proposals and emphasized that all deities deserve respect. He added that the final decision rests with the government. Meanwhile, in Bihar, separate political tensions are brewing over remarks and debates related to “Brahminism,” further intensifying caste-driven political discourse.
