Bihar Election: High voter turnout in Bihar’s first phase polls sparks political claims, charges and controversies

Bihar has set a new record in voter turnout during the first phase of the 2025 assembly elections, marking a remarkable chapter in the state’s political history. The unprecedented participation has now become a matter of political debate, with each party claiming it as evidence of their imminent victory. Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that the high turnout signals the downfall of the Mahagathbandhan, predicting a massive win for the NDA. According to him, Bihar voters have chosen continuity and progress, linking the turnout to Nitish Kumar’s governance record. Historically, Bihar’s voting pattern has often reflected political continuity. In 2010, voter turnout rose to 52.7% and resulted in a major NDA victory. In 2015, the turnout further increased to 56.7%, keeping Nitish in power, albeit with the Mahagathbandhan. In 2020, the turnout touched 57.3%, and Nitish Kumar again returned as Chief Minister, this time with the NDA. The current record-breaking turnout of over 62% is reminiscent of 1995 when Lalu Yadav’s RJD retained power with a 61.8% turnout. Political analysts suggest that higher voter participation this time may reflect anti-incumbency and a desire for change, while NDA leaders argue it proves faith in Nitish Kumar’s leadership. Social media is abuzz with mixed reactions — some celebrating it as the victory of democracy, others alleging manipulation and bogus voting. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, have accused the BJP of orchestrating a “voting scam,” claiming votes were cast from both Delhi and Bihar by the same individuals. The Election Commission, led by officials like Vivek Joshi, has dismissed these claims as baseless. Meanwhile, BJP has intensified its outreach in Seemanchal, identifying minority-dominated booths and deploying its minority wing for door-to-door campaigns. With rising turnout and mounting accusations, Bihar’s election battle is poised to be its fiercest yet.
