Addressing the fourth day of the AI India Expo Summit 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need for strong ethical norms in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence. He stated that AI companies must focus not only on profit but also on purpose, highlighting the importance of ethical commitments. The Prime Minister outlined three key suggestions for responsible AI development. First, he stressed the need for a trusted global data framework that respects data sovereignty, noting that unreliable data leads to unreliable outcomes. Second, he called for greater transparency in AI safety rules, advocating a shift from “black box” systems to a “glass box” approach where rules can be verified, ensuring accountability. Third, he referred to the “paper clip problem” in AI research to underline the necessity of embedding clear human values and guidance into AI systems. Modi highlighted India’s expanding AI infrastructure, mentioning 38,000 GPUs currently operational, with 24,000 more to be added within six months. He reiterated that AI should serve humanity and promote innovation, inclusion, and trust.
