Shield AI is building a future where aircraft no longer need runways

According to Brandon Tseng, Shield AI’s co-founder, president, and a former Navy SEAL, the company’s vision is rooted in the belief that “the greatest victory requires no war.” This philosophy underscores Shield AI’s long-term mission to use intelligent systems to deter conflict rather than escalate it.Tseng explained that the X-BAT represents the next strategic phase in the company’s “master plan” to demonstrate the true value of autonomy, expand it across multiple military domains, and ultimately reinvent the concept of airpower. He described X-BAT as a transformative aircraft capable of operating entirely without runways. This independence offers military forces the ability to take off and land from ships, islands, or rough terrain, significantly increasing operational reach. “Airpower without runways is the holy grail of deterrence,” Tseng said. “It gives our forces persistence, reach, and survivability, and it buys diplomacy another day.”

Software Hivemind gives X-BAT the ability to think and fly on its own

At the centre of X-BAT’s innovation is Hivemind, Shield AI’s proprietary autonomy software. Hivemind is the digital “brain” that allows the aircraft to think, plan, and act on its own in environments where communication links might be disrupted or unavailable. Traditional drones rely heavily on constant operator input and GPS signals. In contrast, X-BAT can navigate, make tactical decisions, and complete missions independently. This capability allows the aircraft to penetrate deeply contested airspace where human pilots or remote-control systems would be at risk.According to Shield AI, Hivemind enables X-BAT to perform several key functions:
