Why was HasanAbi subpoenaed by the US Treasury? Cuba trip controversy explained

Hasan Piker is facing federal scrutiny after the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control reportedly issued subpoenas connected to his March 2026 Cuba trip. Authorities are investigating whether participants violated U.S. sanctions laws through financial or travel-related activities involving Cuban government-linked entities. HasanAbi denied wrongdoing, saying, “we stayed at the right hotel btw.” The controversy quickly spread online, with creators and critics debating whether the political streamer could face serious consequences.

Political streamer Hasan Piker has found himself at the center of another major online controversy after reports revealed that the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control issued subpoenas connected to his March 2026 trip to Cuba. The development spread quickly across social media, with critics and supporters instantly turning the situation into one of the internet’s biggest political flashpoints. The subpoenas reportedly focus on whether participants involved in the “Nuestra América Convoy” violated U.S. sanctions laws while traveling to Cuba. Federal authorities are said to be reviewing financial activity, coordination efforts, and possible interactions involving Cuban government-linked entities. While no charges have been announced, the investigation has already triggered heated debate online over activism, foreign policy, and political speech.

HasanAbi Cuba trip controversy sparks federal scrutiny

According to reports, investigators are examining whether the trip crossed legal boundaries tied to U.S. sanctions on Cuba. Those sanctions place restrictions on trade, financial transactions, and certain travel-related activities involving entities connected to the Cuban government or military. One item that is getting a lot of attention is hotel accommodations. The rules from OFAC say Americans could be penalized for knowingly doing business with hotels owned by the military in Cuba. Possible outcomes include freezing of assets, fines, compliance bans and even criminal investigation in extreme cases.HasanAbi pushed back strongly against the accusations after the subpoena news surfaced online. Responding to criticism on X, he wrote:”we stayed at the right hotel btw. the govt got duped by a … viral twitter post. i’m losing my mind.” The comment quickly circulated across streaming communities, where reactions ranged from support to outright mockery. Some creators defended Hasan’s humanitarian explanation for the trip, while others argued the investigation could become much more serious if federal officials believe sanctions laws were intentionally ignored.

HasanAbi responds as streamers and critics react online

The controversy exploded further after streamer Tectone shared his own reaction to the subpoena reports. Posting on social media, he claimed:”THEY JUST SUBPOENAD HASAN. HE IS 500% … THE LEGENDARY SERIES MAY BE COMING TO AN END. TRULY A MASSIVE DAY FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.”HasanAbi later criticized the American government directly while addressing the investigation and the broader political conversation surrounding Cuba. Quoting coverage of the subpoena reports, he posted:”the american govt would rather try to criminalize delivering aid to a country we’ve starved, than punish the epstein class.”The situation has now moved beyond ordinary streamer drama. What began as a politically charged trip has turned into a federal issue attracting national attention. With authorities still reviewing the matter and social media continuing to amplify every update, HasanAbi’s Cuba controversy is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
