Faye Greenwood shares how a sudden heart attack led to a life-saving heart transplant
The ordeal began in July while Faye Greenwood was in Paris. She told the BBC that she first felt chest pain and then started vomiting. Soon after, the pain became overwhelming. She said, “I can’t really remember a lot, but I just felt I was in really bad pain, something I’ve never felt before.”Greenwood described the moment as feeling like “doom” and said it felt as if “the world was closing in.” Her fiancé, Ailbhe Lower, explained that language barriers made the situation worse. Because Greenwood was young, people did not immediately think she was having a heart attack. He said this caused a delay of nearly six and a half hours before she was admitted to a hospital.Doctors later diagnosed Greenwood with dilated cardiomyopathy. However, they said it may not have caused the heart attack, and the exact reason for it is still unknown. While recovering, doctors told Greenwood she might need to wait up to a year for a heart transplant. Instead, a donor was found much sooner. She left the hospital just over four months after being admitted. Looking back, Greenwood said, “It’s just something you never really think that you’re going to have to deal with.”The couple also faced heavy costs. Greenwood said her hospital bill was close to $19,000 (£14,000). She also had to be flown back to the UK in an air ambulance, which cost another $54,000 (£40,000). She called the financial stress “really scary,” especially since they had been saving to move out of her fiancé’s mother’s house.Lower said it felt unfair that Greenwood suffered a heart attack despite living a healthier life than him. Greenwood now urges people to listen to their bodies and never ignore warning signs, even when they are young. Also Read: Top 10 Most Subscribed YouTube Channels In The World
