What is the 25th Amendment—and why Trump’s Norway letter is reviving it

'Invoke it now': Why critics argue the 25th Amendment should be invoked after Trump’s Norway letter

A letter to Norway Prime Minister from US President Donald Trump has ignited the demand to invoke Amendment25 in the US politics. Iranian-origin Democrat Yassamin Ansari slammed Trump for his letter and called the president “mentally ill.”

Trump ‘Declares Clash’ With NATO | How Norway PM’s PRIVATE Text Fanned US’ Greenland Grab Fire

In a post on X, Ansari said, “The president of the United States is extremely mentally ill, and it’s putting all of our lives at risk. The 25th Amendment exists for a reason—we need to invoke it immediately.”What Trump wrote in letter?Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump escalated rhetoric about the United States potentially annexing Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and also about the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump’s posture toward Greenland drew backlash on the global stage, as European allies viewed his position as a threat to the island’s sovereignty. Some European countries sent troops to Greenland, while Trump threatened to enact tariffs against European countries that opposed the US’s efforts to take control of the territory.Trump reiterated threats concerning Greenland in his letter to the Norwegian leader, PBS News reported on Sunday. He also said that he no longer feels obliged to think only of peace after not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year.According to the outlet, the President wrote: “Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a ‘right of ownership’ anyway?”There are no written documents; it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT.”Netizens demand invoke of 25th AmendmentOn social media, several users are asking to invoke the 25th Amendment. One of the users said, “If this isn’t enough to invoke the #25thAmendmentNow then there is no stopping this madman.”Another said, “Donald Trump has gone beyond parody. He’s a danger to himself, America and the world. Congress needs to impeach him before he starts a World War! #ImpeachTrumpNow #25thAmendmentNow #CongressDoSomething” A user said, “Americans with a brain would like to enter the letter to Norway into evidence, as well as the Epstien Files, Venezuela takeover, Ice in every state allowed to do whatever they want to people, to ask congress to call for the #25thAmendmentNow for #Trump.”What is 25th Amendment?Section 1: In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.Section 2:Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.Section 3:Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.Section 4:Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President. If invoked, who will be the next president? It can be executed whenever the vice president and a majority of other Cabinet members believe the President is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”In that scenario, the vice president would become President. No Cabinet member signalled a willingness to remove Trump from office. Go to Source
