Watch: Woman dies from bungee jumping in Brazil as organisers forget to attach safety rope

A 21-year-old woman died in Limeira, Brazil, after being launched from a height of approximately 40 meters during a bungee jump activity without being connected to the safety rope, according to military police and witness accounts.Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a physical education and sports management graduate, died at the scene at the so-called “Ponte do Esqueleto” (Skeleton Bridge), a location known for extreme sports in the interior of São Paulo state.The accident occurred on Saturday morning. According to the Military Police, people on site reported that the safety equipment was not properly secured before the jump. The young woman was launched from the platform and fell approximately 40 meters, suffering multiple injuries. Paramedics and firefighters confirmed her death at the scene.Shortly before the jump, Freitas posted a message on her Instagram stories. In a joking tone, she wrote: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?” Her Instagram profile was taken down hours after her death.On social media, she used to share snapshots of her daily life, as well as posts related to physical activity, nature and well-being. She had recently graduated in Physical Education and Sports Management and was a resident of Jandira in Greater São Paulo.

Accident captured on video

The accident was recorded on video. Footage shows the young woman being led to the platform by members of the team responsible for the activity. Immediately after she was launched, people can be heard shouting “Guys, the rope!” when they realized the safety equipment had not been connected.According to the Military Police, the equipment was not properly secured, causing the fall and resulting in multiple injuries. People at the scene tried to provide first aid, but medical personnel confirmed her death on the trail.Freitas’s fiancé became ill upon arriving at the scene and also needed medical attention. He was taken to a hospital, according to police.The Military Police reported that two men responsible fled the scene but were located with the help of an Águia helicopter during searches in the wooded area. In total, six people were reportedly arrested in connection with the incident.The case has been referred to the 2nd Police District of Limeira for investigation. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, including who was responsible for securing the safety equipment and whether proper protocols were followed.
