UAE to travel underground at Tesla speed? Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build Dubai Loop in most unexpected Middle East move

Dubai Signs Elon Musk’s Boring Company to Build Futuristic “Dubai Loop” Revolutionising Urban Transport Beneath the City

Dubai has taken a major step toward realising one of the most ambitious transport innovations of the 21st century. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has officially signed a contract with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company (TBC) to build the Dubai Loop, a futuristic underground transport system aimed at drastically cutting commute times and easing congestion in the emirate’s busiest districts. The announcement was amplified on social media when TBC tweeted about the partnership, thanking key UAE leaders including Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Mattar Al Tayer and was retweeted by Elon Musk himself with the caption, “Boring Company to build Dubai Loop! (sic)” and accompanying visuals of the project.

What is the Dubai Loop?

The Dubai Loop is a groundbreaking underground transport project developed in partnership between Dubai’s RTA and The Boring Company. It seeks to introduce a network of tunnels beneath the city through which vehicles, potentially including Tesla cars, will shuttle passengers quickly between major hubs. The project is part of Dubai’s wider vision to adopt cutting-edge, sustainable mobility solutions that match its reputation as a global smart city.According to the official RTA release, the first phase of implementation will focus on a 6.4-kilometer pilot route with four stations connecting major areas, notably the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Dubai Mall. This phase is expected to lay the groundwork for further expansion across the city. Once complete, the full Dubai Loop network is projected to span up to 22.2–24 kilometers, including 19 stations, reaching from Dubai World Trade Centre and the financial district through to Business Bay and central commercial zones.

Transforming mobility in Dubai

One of the most eye-catching aspects of the Dubai Loop is its potential to dramatically cut travel times. For example, the route between DIFC and Dubai Mall, which normally takes around 20 minutes by road, could be reduced to as little as three minutes once the underground system is operational. Officials estimate that the initial pilot route could serve around 13,000 passengers per day, with capacity growing significantly as later phases expand the system.

The Dubai Loop aligns with broader smart-city goals, including reduced congestion, lower emissions and seamless integration with other public transport modes. By moving some commuting underground, the surface streets can be less crowded and more pedestrian-friendly.

Dubai Loop’s costs, technology and timeline

The first phase is budgeted at approximately AED 565 million (~$154 million) and is expected to commence construction in late 2026, following design and preparatory work. The full project, spanning the larger network, could cost around AED 2 billion (~$545 million) and is planned to be completed over three years. The tunnels themselves will be 3.6 metres in diameter, optimized for vehicle-based passenger shuttles, with The Boring Company’s proprietary fast and cost-effective tunnelling technology reducing disruption and construction time compared with traditional underground infrastructure.

Elon Musk’s role and global ambition

The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk, has pioneered underground tunnelling projects in the US most notably the Las Vegas Loop system that shuttles passengers beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center. With the Dubai Loop, TBC expands its footprint internationally, bringing its vision of tunnel-based transport to a bustling global metropolis.Elon Musk’s own amplification of the project on social media underscores its high profile and signals confidence in its potential impact, even as it pushes the boundaries of what conventional urban transit looks like.

Dubai’s smart city vision meets real-world innovation

Dubai’s embrace of the Dubai Loop reflects a broader shift toward future-focused urban mobility. While traditional mass transit systems like metro lines and buses remain essential, the Loop represents a complementary vision, which is rapid, point-to-point underground mobility that alleviates surface traffic and enhances convenience for residents and visitors alike. It also builds on Dubai’s track record of adopting pioneering technologies, from automated metro systems to autonomous taxis, positioning the emirate as a global testbed for tomorrow’s transport innovations. The official signing between RTA Dubai and The Boring Company to build the Dubai Loop marks a significant milestone in urban transportation. With construction set to begin in late 2026 on the pilot phase, this ambitious project could convert the emirate’s bustling streets into a more efficient, high-speed underground mobility network connecting major city hubs. Backed by strong leadership and global tech expertise, the Dubai Loop embodies Dubai’s bold vision of a smarter, faster and more sustainable future of urban mobility. Go to Source
