Sharjah has taken a historic step to formally recognize the contributions of imams and muezzins by granting them the same status and benefits as government employees. The directive, issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, highlights the emirate’s commitment to valuing those who play a central role in guiding and supporting its mosques.Under this new initiative, all imams and muezzins across Sharjah will be included in the emirate’s general government staff. This ensures they are entitled to promotions in line with government regulations, various allowances, comprehensive health insurance, and a work nature allowance of AED 3,000. Their professional contributions are now formally recognized and rewarded on the same scale as other government employees. The directive also addresses leave policies, allowing imams and muezzins to retain their accrued periodic leave if they choose not to use it. In such cases, the Department of Islamic Affairs will provide the cash equivalent, ensuring that mosque staff are not disadvantaged for prioritizing their duties. This move reflects Sharjah’s broader commitment to supporting the spiritual and social backbone of the community. By formalizing employment, providing financial security, and extending government benefits, the emirate ensures that those serving in mosques can continue their vital work with dignity and recognition. The decision underscores the importance of their role in fostering community cohesion and spiritual guidance, setting a benchmark for valuing religious staff in the region.
