UAE organizes mass wedding for Gaza couples on 54th Union Day: All you need to know

On this year’s 54th Union Day, the UAE marked its national anniversary not only with traditional fireworks and tributes to its Founding Fathers, but with an unexpected and deeply symbolic gesture: a mass wedding for 54 Palestinian couples in Gaza, one couple for each year of the federation’s journey. This act was part of the UAE’s ongoing humanitarian campaign, Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, designed to bring relief and dignity to the people of Gaza. What might initially appear as a festive celebration is, in fact, a carefully crafted humanitarian gesture that blends cultural diplomacy, soft power, and emotional solidarity. It reflects not only the UAE’s evolving identity but also Gaza’s struggle to hold on to some semblance of normalcy amid decades of conflict.

Details of the ceremony

The mass wedding took place on 2 December 2025 in Khan Yunis, Gaza, in a venue prepared by UAE humanitarian teams to safely host the large gathering. A total of 54 couples were married, each symbolising one year of the UAE’s Union Day. The ceremony was attended by over 21,000 people, including families, local elders, cultural coordinators, and aid workers.Despite the challenging circumstances, the organisers created a warm and dignified environment. The brides wore traditional Palestinian garments such as the Thawb Al-Farah, and the grooms were dressed in formal attire. Alongside the ceremony, each couple received financial assistance, household items, and starter kits to help them begin their married lives. This wasn’t just a symbolic event; it also provided practical support for young people facing economic hardship.

Thawb Al-Farah and why does this matter?

The Thawb Al-Farah, literally “the dress of joy,” draws from centuries of Palestinian textile heritage. The Palestinian thobe is often hand-embroidered with tatreez motifs that represent family stories, village identities, and carry blessings for fertility and protection. These stitched symbols are not just decorative, they are portable memory-maps of home.In Gaza, the ongoing conflict has severed many of these material ties. Heirloom dresses have been lost in house damages, and embroidery workshops have been disrupted. For the brides who received a thawb or newly embroidered garments at the mass wedding, this moment did two things: it restored a key ritual element of the wedding and reconnected families to their cultural continuity. Wearing a newly made or restored thawb became an act of resistance, a declaration that heritage, despite everything, survives.

What is Operation Chivalrous Knight 3?

Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 is a UAE-led humanitarian campaign launched to provide ongoing support to Gaza. Since its inception two years ago, the operation has facilitated over 8,700 land-transport trucks, delivering more than 1.6 million aid parcels through 250+ convoys into Gaza. The operation delivers essential supplies, including food, medical aid, hygiene items, shelter materials, and winter clothing, with specific parcels for women and children. In addition to these, it has provided 33 ambulances, 36 tankers, medical tents, field bakeries, and equipment for water and infrastructure projects, addressing both immediate needs and long-term recovery. The UAE’s logistical centre in Al Arish coordinates the operation, ensuring swift and efficient dispatches in collaboration with local authorities to maintain a continuous flow of aid.Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 is more than just emergency assistance; it aims to rebuild Gaza’s social and cultural fabric disrupted by the conflict. This includes efforts to restore daily life and revitalize local traditions, alongside addressing urgent material needs. The mass wedding, organised under this operation, is a symbolic part of a broader effort to support the human spirit, not just survival. The operation underscores the UAE’s commitment to easing hardship and providing both material and emotional support to those affected by the ongoing crisis.

Why did the UAE do this?

The UAE’s decision to host a mass wedding for Palestinians on its 54th Union Day reflects its ongoing humanitarian efforts in Gaza. The wedding is part of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, a broader initiative aimed at providing support to Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict.Union Day marks a significant moment in the UAE’s history, and by choosing this day for the event, the UAE has linked its own national milestone with the ongoing struggles in Gaza. The mass wedding is intended to offer a gesture of solidarity, with an emphasis on restoring a sense of normalcy, reviving cultural practices, and providing practical support for young couples facing hardship.Through the operation, the UAE aims to address not just immediate needs, but also the emotional and social impact of conflict, showing that aid can extend beyond survival to help maintain cultural continuity and dignity.
