The UAE has launched a unique challenge inviting the public to design a commemorative coin using generative AI. This initiative, in collaboration with the Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications and the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), aims to celebrate the country’s technological journey and showcase its achievements in the past, present, and future. This launch coincides with UAE Codes Day, marking the 24th anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s launch of the region’s first e-government on 29 October 2001, a significant milestone that catalysed the country’s digital transformation.

A step forward in digital innovation

The initiative underscores the UAE’s ongoing commitment to solidifying its position as a global leader in innovation and technology. Omar Sultan Al Olama, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, highlighted the significance of this move:“Through this commemorative coin design challenge, we celebrate the UAE’s journey, one that combines ambition and vision to harness technology for the benefit of societies. We continue to build on our achievements to solidify the UAE’s global leadership in AI and coding, and to advance our vision of a digital future driven by innovation, knowledge, and meaningful community participation.” Al Olama also noted the initiative’s alignment with the UAE’s digital transformation efforts, enabling society to actively participate in the technological future via generative AI tools.

Commemorative coin challenge details

The challenge is open to all UAE residents who wish to contribute to the UAE’s vision for a future based on technology, AI, and innovation. Participants will create their designs using generative AI tools, ensuring a circular format suitable for minting and complying with ethical and legal standards. The winning design will be featured on an official commemorative coin issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. The winner will be announced during the UAE Codes 2025 events. Interested participants can submit their designs via its official platform

UAE’s continued leadership in AI and digital economy

Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE, praised the initiative, noting its role in reinforcing the country’s leadership in AI and digital innovation:“The UAE Codes initiative embodies the wise leadership’s vision to solidify the UAE’s position as a global hub for innovation. It achieves this by leveraging artificial intelligence to design digital solutions and futuristic services that reinforce a sustainable and knowledge-based economy.” Balama highlighted the challenge as a model for deepening community engagement in digital creativity, fostering the development of national skills, and supporting the UAE’s long-term economic prosperity.

The ministry’s role in digital transformation

The Ministry of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, established in 2020, plays a pivotal role in driving the UAE’s AI initiatives, advancing its digital economy, and overseeing the implementation of remote work applications. As part of the UAE’s broader strategy to position itself as a global hub for innovation, the ministry works to embed advanced technologies into all sectors of society, propelling the nation towards a knowledge-based economy.

Leadership and vision

The Ministry of State for Artificial Intelligence is led by Omar Sultan Al Olama, who was appointed as Minister of State in 2020. A prominent figure in the UAE’s AI governance efforts, Al Olama is dedicated to shaping the country’s digital future, focusing on both domestic AI initiatives and fostering international partnerships that position the UAE at the forefront of global digital transformation.

Key initiatives

  1. UAE Charter for the Development and Use of AI (2024)

Launched in July 2024, this charter outlines ethical principles for AI development and use. It’s designed to align with the UAE’s broader AI strategy, ensuring that AI technologies are developed responsibly, with a focus on societal benefit and sustainable growth.
  2. International AI Policy and Partnerships

In September 2024, the UAE strengthened its ties with the United States in the AI sector to enhance access to advanced technologies and bolster the country’s tech industry. In October 2024, the UAE Cabinet approved the country’s stance on international AI governance, reinforcing the nation’s leadership and its alignment with global technology governance frameworks.
