UAE: Dubai launches Al Maktoum Archives to preserve the legacy of its rulers

Dubai has inaugurated the Al Maktoum Archives, a dedicated institution aimed at documenting the emirate’s rich history and the enduring contributions of its ruling family. The archives will serve as a comprehensive resource on the leadership, cultural achievements, and historical milestones of Dubai’s rulers, ensuring this heritage is preserved for future generations.

Preserving Dubai’s history and leadership

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, attended the launch of the Al Maktoum Archives, accompanied by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. The initiative, overseen by the Executive Office of Sheikh Mohammed, is designed to safeguard the legacy of Dubai’s rulers and the Al Maktoum family.Sheikh Mohammed described the archives as “a national archive and an open book offering insights on the history of governance in Dubai as a model for advancing development.” He added that the facility would strengthen national history and serve as a reference for understanding the leadership and humanitarian contributions of Dubai’s rulers.

Comprehensive records and exhibitions

The archives will collect and preserve biographies, literary works, official records, photographs, and artefacts related to Dubai’s rulers. The launch event featured:

  • A screening of the documentary Rashid the Leader and another short film on Dubai’s rulers
  • Exhibitions of historical photographs dating back to 1894, including previously unseen images of the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum and Sheikh Butti bin Suhail Al Maktoum
  • Displays covering subsequent rulers: Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum (1912–1958), Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum (1958–1990), Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum (1990–2006), and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (2006–present)
  • Books and reference publications documenting Dubai’s development and the rulers’ contributions
  • Interviews with individuals who witnessed key moments in the emirate’s history

During the ceremony, Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on plans for creating a digital record of Dubai’s rulers, developing archival expertise among national talent, and ensuring the facility becomes a primary reference for decision-makers, researchers, and academics.

Governance and strategic objectives

In conjunction with the launch, Sheikh Mohammed issued Decree No. 44 of 2025, establishing the Board of Directors of the Al Maktoum Archives Foundation. The Board will be chaired by the Executive Office Chairman and include senior officials such as the Secretary General of The Executive Council of Dubai, the Director General of Dubai Municipality, the Director General of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of Dubai Media Council, the CEO of the Mohammed bin Rashid Library Foundation, and two expert members appointed by the Chairman. The decree takes immediate effect and will be published in the Official Gazette.The archives’ mission includes documenting the oral history of Dubai and its rulers, producing documentaries, conducting interviews, compiling historical studies on biographies, and preserving artefacts and key historical events. Sheikh Mohammed received an overview of these objectives during the launch.

Cultural and educational impact

Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, Chairman of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, emphasized the human-centered aspect of Dubai’s story. He highlighted how the rulers’ focus on public service, improving quality of life, and developing human potential has guided the emirate’s progress. He stated that the Al Maktoum Archives will make this legacy accessible to researchers and inspire current and future generations.The archives will collaborate with local, regional, and international organizations to share expertise, raise cultural awareness, and facilitate access to historical documents. It will publish books, bulletins, and reference works, highlighting leadership experiences, humanitarian contributions, and the intellectual, political, and social achievements of Dubai’s rulers. Historical documents will include official correspondence, records bearing signatures or seals, and materials reflecting Dubai’s development and the Al Maktoum family’s vision. Go to Source
