‘Time to cancel’: Why is Netflix facing a boycott? What’s the MAGA drama behind the curtains

'Time to cancel': Why is Netflix facing a boycott? What's the MAGA drama behind the curtains

Netflix is facing fresh calls for cancellation from supporters of US President Donald Trump, after the platform’s co-founder Reed Hastings made a donation and rumours spread online about a deal with comedian Stephen Colbert. The backlash erupted on X over the weekend, with several MAGA-aligned accounts declaring they would end their Netflix subscriptions. The anger was sparked by Hastings’s $2 million contribution to California governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting efforts. Adding fuel to the fire was an unverified claim — for which no evidence exists — that Netflix had signed a $13 million deal with Colbert.

Rumours swirl, frustrations mount

While no such deal has been officially announced, Colbert himself has been a frequent target of conservative ire, particularly since his clash with Trump, who dismissed him as a “total loser.” Colbert also recently announced his decision to step down from The Late Show, a move that has kept him in the political spotlight. On X, users rallied around the hashtag calls to cancel, with some venting frustration over both Hastings’ donation and the rumoured Colbert connection.”Time to cancel Netflix,” one user wrote.Another asked, “Is Netflix the new Cracker Barrel?” in reference to past boycotts of the restaurant chain.”Netflix is doing everything it can to make me cancel,” another complained, citing what they saw as partisan choices.
