The anger was sparked by Hastings’s $2 million contribution to California governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting efforts. Adding fuel to the fire was an unverified claim — for which no evidence exists — that Netflix had signed a $13 million deal with Colbert.

While no such deal has been officially announced, Colbert himself has been a frequent target of conservative ire, particularly since his clash with Trump, who dismissed him as a “total loser.” Colbert also recently announced his decision to step down from The Late Show, a move that has kept him in the political spotlight.
