The Art of the Deal, drawn in ink: Trump’s map makes India the anchor

Art of the deal: How India turned from Maharaja of tariffs to king of deals

The TOI correspondent from Washington: In a move blending economic diplomacy with strategic signaling, the Trump administration on Friday released a map of India depicting the entire Jammu and Kashmir region, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), and Aksai Chin as integral parts of Indian territory. The graphic, shared by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on X, accompanied the announcement of a framework for an interim trade agreement between the US and India. The map’s significance lies in its departure from historical US practices, which often marked PoK and Aksai Chin as disputed. Analysts view this as a deliberate geopolitical nod to India’s claims, irking Pakistan and China amid sketchy US relations with both. It also signals the return of strategic support for India as a counterweight in the Indo-Pacific – a policy that briefly appeared to have been eclipsed – especially after recent Saudi-Pakistan pacts and US geo-political outreach towards Beijing on a G-2 axis despite a ferocious trade war.

The release of the map, described by some as “cartographic diplomacy,” marks a definitive end to decades of US “neutrality” in the region’s volatile borders. Explicitly aligning the US government’s official depiction with India’s territorial claims, the Trump administration may have effectively signaled that India is no longer just a “partner,” but the primary regional anchor for American interests in Asia. By validating India’s borders while simultaneously demanding a cessation of Russian oil imports, Washington also appears to be demonstrating that its support is absolute—provided the alignment is reciprocal.Analysts suggest the map was a key, albeit silent, component of the “Grand Bargain” struck between President Trump and PM Modi. While the public focus remains on the reduction of tariffs from 50% to 18% and India’s $500 billion “Buy American” pledge, the territorial validation provides New Delhi with a significant diplomatic victory that transcends trade balances. “Full marks to the US for the map. Well done,” noted defense analyst Major Gaurav Arya, celebrating the departure from the US stand showing PoK as part of Pakistan. In India, the hashtag #AkhandBharat trended briefly as nationalist supporters hailed the move as global recognition of India’s integrity. Conversely, Pakistani social media users expressed deep concern, with many viewing the map as a betrayal of long-standing diplomatic protocols.
