Texas meteor sighting: Houston woman claims space rock crashed through roof. What Nasa says

Houston residents reported a mysterious boom that sounded like a large blast happening nearby, while several people claimed that they saw fireballs lighting up the sky and then falling down in black smoke on Saturday afternoon. The Brenham fire department confirmed that they received reports of a possible explosion near Highway 50, but they found nothing upon reaching there. Sherrie James, a woman, claimed that an unusual rock crashed through her roof, leaving a large hole in the ceiling and in her flooring. As nothing could confirm what actually happened, the American Meteor Society said it might be a meteor shower over Texas. The society said it received more than 100 reports of some ‘fireball event’.

According to those who witnessed what is believed to be a meteor shower lasted anywhere between 1.5 seconds and 7.5 seconds. Hours later, Nasa confirmed the meteo movement which became visible 49 miles above Stagecoach, northwest of Houston. NASA said the meteor moved southeast at 35,000 mph, breaking apart 29 miles above Bammel, just west of Cypress Station.

Nasa statement on meteor sighting above Texas

“Many eyewitnesses in the state of Texas have filed reports on the American Meteor Society website of a bright fireball seen on March 21 at 4:40 PM Central Daylight Time (2026 Mar 21 21:40 UTC). The meteor was also detected by the Geostationary Lightning Mappers on the GOES satellites. An analysis of the currently available data indicates that the meteor became visible at an altitude of 49 miles above Stagecoach, located northwest of Houston. It moved southeast at 35,000 miles per hour, breaking apart 29 miles above Bammel, just to the west of Cypress Station. The disintegration of the asteroidal fragment – which weighed about a ton with a diameter of 3 feet – unleashed an energy of 26 tons of TNT, creating a pressure wave that propagated to the ground and causing the booms heard by some in the area. Doppler weather radar shows meteorites falling to the ground between Willowbrook and Northgate Crossing,” Nasa said.
