Super Typhoon Ragasa: Storms hits China with powerful winds, raging water; nearly 2 million evacuated - watch

Super Typhoon Ragasa struck Xiachuan Island, China, bringing fierce winds, heavy rain, and widespread flooding after wreaking havoc in Hong Kong. One of the strongest storms in years, Ragasa has prompted Chinese authorities to issue evacuation orders for two million people.The national meteorological agency predicted that the powerful typhoon would hit the coast between Yangjiang and Zhanjiang on Wednesday evening. In response, schools, factories, and transport services were shut down across roughly a dozen cities.Frightening footage has emerged from Guangdong, China, where a local station recorded wind gusts of 67 m/s, the strongest ever measured in the region, according to Global Times. Another footage captured powerful gusts sweeping through a railway station in Guangdong, sending luggages flying across platforms.Nearly 1.9 million people were evacuated across Guangdong province, AP reported. In Chuandao town, a weather station recorded gusts reaching 241 kph (around 150 mph) at noon, the strongest ever in Jiangmen since records began. Massive waves pounded Zhuhai’s coastline, while powerful winds lashed trees under torrential rain, scattering branches across streets. A video showed storm surge crashing into the Pearl River Estuary in the coastal areas of Zhuhai’s Gaolan Island.Streets and low-lying zones were submerged, while water sweept through homes and waterfront infrastructure, bringing the region to a halt. Super Typhoon Ragasa has left a trail of destruction across the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. In the Philippines, at least 10 people died, including seven fishermen whose boat capsized, and five others remain missing, with nearly 700,000 affected and 25,000 taking refuge in emergency shelters. In Taiwan, heavy rains caused a barrier lake in Hualien County to overflow, destroying a bridge and flooding roads in Guangfu township; authorities reported 14 deaths, 34 injuries, and 124 people unaccounted for.Hong Kong recorded sustained winds of 195 kph (120 mph), while Macau suspended power in flooded low-lying areas.
