‘She might transition my son’: Elon Musk seeks custody from Ashley St. Clair

Elon Musk has said he will file for full custody of the young son he shares with writer and online personality Ashley St. Clair, citing concerns over her recent public remarks on gender identity.Replying to a post on X, Musk said he intended to initiate custody proceedings “today”, arguing that statements made by St. Clair suggested openness to gender transition for their one-year-old child. He framed the move as a matter of parental responsibility and child welfare. As of publication, no court filing had yet been publicly confirmed.

Elon Musk cites social media posts as trigger for escalation

Musk’s announcement followed renewed scrutiny of St. Clair’s recent social media activity, in which she appeared to reassess earlier views and express support for trans-affirming positions. Screenshots of those posts circulated widely online, prompting backlash from some users and accusations of inconsistency.Responding publicly, Musk said the statements raised serious concerns for him about his son’s future and fears that the child’s mother might seek to transition his child’s gender, leading him to signal his intention to seek full custody. St. Clair has not issued a detailed public response to Musk’s latest comments. The relationship between Musk and St. Clair became public in early 2025, when St. Clair disclosed that she had given birth several months earlier to a son fathered by Musk. She said the child had been kept out of the public eye for safety and privacy reasons, but that disclosure became unavoidable amid growing media attention.St. Clair later filed petitions in New York seeking sole legal and physical custody, alongside a declaration of paternity. In those filings and subsequent public statements, she alleged Musk had limited involvement in the child’s daily life. Musk has acknowledged providing substantial financial support but disputed claims that he was disengaged, saying contact and payments became contentious once legal proceedings began. The dispute also intersects with Musk’s long-standing public criticism of transgender ideology, shaped in part by his own family experience. He has previously spoken at length about his estrangement from his adult transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, who legally changed her name and severed ties with him.Musk has said in interviews and social media posts that he believes her transition was influenced by external social, cultural and institutional pressures rather than arising independently. He has argued that these influences played a decisive role during her adolescence, at times referring to what he calls a “woke mind virus” and suggesting that parental and societal environments can shape such outcomes. Musk has framed these views as a warning drawn from personal experience, saying they inform his approach to parenting younger children.

A familiar legal pattern

The latest development echoes Musk’s earlier custody disputes, including high-profile legal battles with musician Grimes, with whom he shares three children. Those cases similarly involved disagreements over access, residence and parental influence, and were marked by periods of public commentary alongside court proceedings. As of now, the dispute remains at the level of public statements, with formal legal steps still pending. With both Musk and St. Clair active on X and the issue already unfolding in public view, further developments are likely to attract intense scrutiny.
