King Salman has ordered the renaming of a vital 13-kilometer stretch in Madinah that links the Prophet’s Mosque to the city’s airport. Now titled Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Road, this key route passes through landmark development zones and reflects the broader vision of urban transformation and quality of life improvements being implemented across Saudi Arabia.

Strategic significance of Prince Mohammed bin Salman road

The newly named Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Road is a primary connector in Madinah’s urban transport network. The 13-kilometer corridor begins at the Prophet’s Mosque and leads directly to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Road, which then provides access to the Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport and its Royal Terminal. The route also runs through Rua Al Madinah, which is currently the largest hospitality development project in the world. This adds both symbolic and functional importance to the roadway, particularly for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims and other visitors traveling to and from one of Islam’s holiest sites.

Integration with Madinah’s urban infrastructure

Prince Mohammed bin Salman Road intersects with three of Madinah’s primary ring roads, reinforcing its role as a key traffic and connectivity artery:

  • King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Road (First Ring Road)
  • King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Road (Second Ring Road)
  • King Khalid bin Abdulaziz Road (Third Ring Road)

These intersections enable seamless movement between central Madinah and the outer urban zones, streamlining travel for both residents and pilgrims.

Development projects enhancing the corridor

A number of major urban development projects are either underway or planned along the newly named road. These initiatives are being implemented by both the Madinah Municipality and the Al Madinah Region Development Authority.Key projects include:

  • Madinah Humanization Program
Focused on transforming the urban environment, this program is improving both vehicle and pedestrian pathways, upgrading building facades, and ensuring all developments align with Saudi architectural design standards. The goal is to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors while preserving the city’s cultural identity.
  • Environmental Rehabilitation of Wadi Qanat
As part of the broader development agenda, the restoration of Wadi Qanat — one of Madinah’s most historic natural valleys — is also being carried out. This environmental initiative is seen as vital to preserving the city’s natural heritage and integrating it into the modern urban landscape.

Leadership endorsement and alignment with Saudi vision 2030

On the occasion of the naming directive, Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the Governor of the Madinah Region and Chairman of the Al Madinah Region Development Authority, expressed deep gratitude to King Salman and the Crown Prince. He acknowledged the Crown Prince’s pioneering leadership in driving national development strategies and emphasized the tangible impact these initiatives have had on Madinah and other regions across the Kingdom. These development efforts align with Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 goals, aimed at modernizing infrastructure, enhancing the urban experience, and elevating the Kingdom’s stature as a destination for religious, cultural, and economic activity.
