Russia's biggest wave of strikes on Ukraine: US factory hit, Ukraine says Putin has no interest in peace

A Russian missile hit an American-owned electronics factory in Mukachevo, western Ukraine, early Thursday, causing extensive damage and injuring at least 15 people, Ukrainian officials said, reported news outlet NPR. The attack was part of one of Russia’s largest overnight airstrikes in the ongoing conflict, involving more than 570 drones and 40 missiles.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on Telegram that the strike targeted an “ordinary civilian enterprise, an American investment,” which produced household items such as coffee machines, as quoted by the outlet. While the company was not named by officials, Ukrainian media identified it as Flex, a multinational electronics manufacturer headquartered in Austin, Texas, and Singapore, with an operation in Mukachevo. Videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising from the industrial plant near the Hungarian border. Ukraine’s military reported that most of the drones and missiles were intercepted, but some penetrated defenses. One civilian fatality was reported in Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine. The attack follows recent diplomatic efforts by US President Donald Trump, who met separately with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin last week in an attempt to initiate peace talks. Trump has directed the US joint chiefs chairman to explore security guarantees for Ukraine, potentially including air support, but has ruled out deploying ground troops. Talks are ongoing with America’s European allies regarding possible troop deployments, though discussions remain preliminary. Many Ukrainians continue to call for strong Western security guarantees, including NATO membership, as a means to end the conflict.”I strongly continue to believe that the only solution is NATO membership for Ukraine,” said Oleksandr Merezhko, a Ukrainian parliament member and head of the foreign affairs committee. “This would stop the war. This would stop Putin’s aggression because Putin is afraid of only one thing – NATO,” as reported by NPR.However, Russia opposes any Western military presence in Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s stance that Russia must have veto power over security guarantees, a position that would undermine their effectiveness.Despite diplomatic activity, Ukraine and Russia remain far apart. “At the present moment, the interests, positions and stances of Ukraine and Russia are diametrically opposed and they cannot be reconciled,” said Merezhko.
