Robin Westman: MAGA Is blaming Ilhan Omar for the Minneapolis shooting; and weaponizing the trans-identity

The August 27 shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, which left two children dead and 17 others injured, has unleashed an ideological storm. While investigators continue to probe the motives of 23-year-old Robin Westman—who left behind a scattershot collage of hate slogans—MAGA-aligned figures have been quick to assign political blame. Their chosen target: Representative Ilhan Omar.

A Narrative with no evidence

Almost immediately after the attack, right-wing commentators began spinning a theory that the shooting reflected a broader “Red-Green alliance” of Islamists and leftists, attempting to tie Omar into the story. “A Tranny and an Islamic sympathizer? Gee, who could have seen that coming? We have only been warning about the Red-Green alliance for how long?” one activist declared online.Local right-wing voices followed suit. “BREAKING — CONFIRMED: Robin Westman (previously ROBERT Westman), the Minneapolis Catholic School shooter, was a MAN who ‘identified’ as a …” a commentator posted, using the shooter’s transgender identity as a political cudgel rather than engaging with the complexity of the crime.

Weaponising trans-identity

For many MAGA figures, Westman’s identity was not just a detail but the centrepiece of their narrative. “The trans agenda is losing. … Now is precisely the moment when trans militants are the MOST dangerous. … Be on your guard,” one commentator warned.Another political figure amplified the claim further: “Today’s evil church school shooter was a trans who was likely groomed and transitioned as a teenager. Congress MUST PASS my bill … to make it a FELONY to perform sex change surgeries … on minors!”These responses turned a local tragedy into an ideological battlefield, with the shooter’s transgender identity leveraged to argue against LGBT rights and healthcare.

The Omar connection myth

Some users insisted that because the attack occurred in Minneapolis, Omar bore political responsibility. In reality, there is no evidence connecting Westman’s actions to her politics or positions. Authorities have characterised the act as domestic terrorism and a hate crime rooted in anti-Catholic violence—not a plot linked to any member of Congress.

A collage of hate

Investigators describe Westman’s social media and video diaries as a chaotic mixture: admiration for past mass shooters, antisemitic Holocaust denial, anti-India slogans, anti-Trump graffiti, and anti-Christian taunts. Rather than a coherent ideology, it was a jumble of borrowed hatreds. The inclusion of nihilistic memes alongside extremist slogans reinforced the view that this was less about doctrine and more about rage.

Why it matters

By pinning the massacre on Ilhan Omar, MAGA figures have shifted attention away from the issues at hand: how hate spreads online, how firearms are accessed, and how incoherent ideologies can harden into acts of terror. For families in Minneapolis, the politics is irrelevant. They are left with grief, mourning children killed during what should have been a safe back-to-school Mass. But the reaction shows how quickly America’s culture wars can turn tragedy into ammunition. Instead of unity, the aftermath has become yet another theatre for the endless blame game. Go to Source
