Anton Chekhov married Olga Knipper three years before his death.
One of the most famous quotes by Russian writer Anton Chekhov is his pithy take on marriage, in which he implied that it inevitably results in loneliness. And those who are afraid of loneliness should not marry. Chekhov wrote this in his collection of private thoughts, ‘Notebook of Anton Chekhov’, which was published posthumously in 1921. Interestingly, Chekhov did get married when he was 41, three years before his death.Chekhov believed marriage is not a cure for existential loneliness.Chekhov believed that trying to marry purely to escape being alone is a recipe for heartbreak. When people enter a relationship out of a fear of isolation, they often project unrealistic expectations onto their partner, expecting that person to fix their inner emptiness. Chekhov argued that true loneliness comes from a lack of self-sufficiency and emotional connection, and sharing a home with someone who does not truly understand you can actually leave you feeling far more alone than being single ever could.
Why did Chekhov think so?
It is believed that Chekhov’s perspective was shaped by his observations as a doctor, a writer, and a fierce defender of personal freedom.As both a physician and a writer, Chekhov spent years examining human behavior. In many of his short stories (like The Husband or About Love), he repeatedly portrayed married couples who lived under the same roof but were completely alienated from each other.Chekhov valued his artistic independence and privacy above almost everything else. In a famous 1895 letter to his publisher Alexei Suvorin, Chekhov wrote:“By all means I will marry if you wish it. But on these conditions: everything must be as it has been hitherto — that is, she must live in Moscow and I in the country, and I will come and see her… Give me a wife who, like the moon, won’t appear in my sky every day.”
Chekhov’s unconventional marriage
Chekhov’s marriage to Olga Knipper was not traditional. Because Chekhov suffered from severe tuberculosis, his doctors forced him to live in the warm climate of Yalta in Crimea. Olga, meanwhile, was at the height of her career and remained in Moscow to act. As a result, they lived apart for most of their married life, staying in touch primarily through a passionate correspondence of over 800 letters.The line was written during his 20s and 30s when he was famously hesitant about marriage: Other cynical notes about marriage and married couples were:“They fell in love, got married, and were unhappy.”“I’ve noticed that those who marry cease to be curious.”“A man and a woman got married because they had nothing else to do.”He viewed traditional marriages as traps that often stifled intellectual curiosity, personal freedom, and self-reliance.
Loneliness is an internal state of mind
While the quote bears Chekhov’s scepticism, the insight that the observation offers is that loneliness is an internal state of mind and marriage can’t fix that. If you struggle to be comfortable in your own company, bringing another person into your life won’t magically make you feel whole; it will just project your inner empty space onto them.
