Travel emergencies can arise unexpectedly—whether it’s a student rushing to join studies abroad, a patient seeking urgent medical treatment overseas, or a professional required to travel for work. Recognizing this, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has introduced an emergency passport renewal service at Muscat International Airport. The facility assists Omani citizens whose passports have less than six months’ validity, providing support in genuine urgent situations while strictly following regulatory guidelines and verifying all emergency requests.

Purpose and scope of the service

ROP’s new airport counter is specifically aimed at Omani citizens who require immediate passport renewal due to urgent circumstances. The service is strictly for emergencies and exceptional cases. Standard passport renewal procedures at police service centres remain unchanged and continue to handle regular applications. The service targets travelers in the following scenarios:

  • Students traveling abroad for studies.
  • Patients seeking urgent medical treatment overseas.
  • Professionals or other citizens needing immediate travel for work or official duties.

Applicants are required to demonstrate the urgency of their situation through original supporting documents, which may include medical reports, official memoranda, or other documentation proving the necessity of their travel.

Eligibility criteria

ROP has outlined clear guidelines to determine eligibility for the airport-based emergency service:

  1. Passport Validity: The passport must have less than six months remaining at the time of application.
  2. Confirmed Travel: Travelers must present a confirmed flight ticket. Preliminary or unconfirmed bookings are not accepted.
  3. Supporting Documentation: Applicants must provide original documents verifying the emergency, such as medical reports, official memos, or urgent travel documents.

These rules ensure that the service is used appropriately and remains focused on citizens with genuine urgent needs.

Operational framework and limitations

ROP emphasizes that the airport service does not replace standard renewal procedures at police service centres. It operates under a prescribed regulatory framework, and all applications are processed according to approved guidelines. The initiative reflects the ROP’s commitment to:

  • Enhancing citizen convenience by providing accessible services in urgent scenarios.
  • Responding promptly to community needs and suggestions.
  • Maintaining efficiency and regulatory compliance in handling emergency passport requests.

ROP’s statement on community service

In official statements, ROP highlighted that the service is part of its ongoing efforts to remain close to the community. By offering this emergency renewal facility, the police aim to facilitate travel for citizens facing exceptional circumstances, while ensuring that all processes remain transparent and regulated. The service is expected to assist citizens who would otherwise face significant challenges in completing urgent international travel, reflecting ROP’s dedication to practical, citizen-focused solutions.
