Oman has won formal inclusion of Al Jabal Al Akhdar Biosphere Reserve and Sirrin (Al Sireen) Biosphere Reserve into UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, a decision announced during the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou (27–28 Sept 2025).
Al Jabal Al Akhdar and Sirrin — the facts you need
- Al Jabal Al Akhdar (the “Green Mountain”) covers roughly 4,500 hectares in the western Hajar range, rising from about 600m to nearly 3,000m and sheltering 60% of Oman’s vascular plant species, plus Arabian ibex, Arabian wolf and more than 71 bird species; nearly 13,000 people live in its transition zone, where traditional agriculture and grazing continue.

Why UNESCO listing matters
